7 WINTER WARDROBE MUST-HAVES

Basics, basics, basics! …No I’m not talking about Pumpkin Spice Latte-loving, UGG boot-wearing basics; I’m talking about the building blocks to your perfect wardrobe.

Let’s face it your closet has seen trends come and go, but the basics— your trusty pair of black skinnys, go-to nude flats or perfect white tee—are forever. You can rest assured that there are some wardrobe essentials that will never go out of style. I’m here to tell you how to create a strong foundation of timeless pieces that can be paired with almost anything in your closet!

The #1 rule for any good basic is that it MUST be versatile. Your basics have to have the ability to be mixed and matched with lots of other clothing, so I would suggest going for pieces that are monochromatic or neutral in color. Another key criteria in finding a good basic is that it should be of good quality. If you invest in a couple of nicer pieces that you can wear regularly it will end up saving you money in the long run (Think: cost per wear). I suggest going for pieces that are more “classic” in style because it is less likely that they will go out of fashion anytime soon.

Here is my checklist for your basic winter wardrobe must-haves (+cost efficient ways to spruce them up!):

A Classic White Button Down:

A timeless addition to any wardrobe! This is a perfect piece for transitioning from work to play because it can be paired with just about anything. Plus – it is super easy to accessorize. I chose the “play” route this time and paired it with some leather leggings (that I got for $8 on Amazon!) and black wedge heels. A great outfit for hitting the town!

The Little Black Dress:

The LBD is a cliché for a reason: It’s a wardrobe necessity. You can dress this particular piece up or down by layering, vesting, accesorizing + much more. I added a fun patterned scarf, brown leather jacket, black tights, and black booties for a chic (and warm!) look.

A Quality Pair of Blue Jeans:

Everyone should have a favorite pair of jeans. I suggest investing in a pair of dark denim jeans. They are very slimming and versatile – you can wear them during the day for a casual look but also dress them up for night! I took the more casual route by adding my favorite pair of brown boots, a white tee and an army jacket. A perfect outfit for the day-to-day.

Long Sleeve Black and White Tops:

These are essential for your winter wardrobe. They are perfect for layering, but can also stand alone. These types of shirts can help stretch your closet way beyond its limits. I was able to add a pop of color by pairing this piece with cranberry skinny jeans ($12 from H&M), a cream scarf and black booties. Hint: Be weary of crew necks, they make most body figures look wider and shorter!

Black Skinny Jeans:

If you know me at all you know I looove black. Black garments just have so much to offer: Stains are difficult, if not impossible, to see. The color is flattering on virtually everyone. And with a black basic, you’re free to add color and fun prints in other areas of your outfit. For this one I added a bright blue top, a cheetah scarf ($6 on Amazon) and brown booties for a classy look.

Sensible Bag:

Contrary to popular belief… this one does NOT have to cost you an arm and a leg. It just has to be practical! I got my favorite bag (featured above) from Target and I think it is more functional than most name brand bags I’ve come across.

Nude Flats:

I know this one may seem a little random but flats are one of the most versatile shoes available. Nude flats are an essential because they are in-style in every single season! Think about it: Nude flats look just as great with a white dress at the beach as they do with jeans and a sweater in the winter. How cool is that? I paired my nude flats with black jeans and a chambray shirt.

Remember: Fashion is supposed to be fun! Don’t exhaust yourself by trying to “outdo” others - it is not a competition. Find your own style that accentuates the unique person you are!
